Fun Facts

There are four Disneyland Railroad
trains in total, each with their own set of five named carriages.  The
trains take it in turns to be refurbished and thoroughly cleaned, with one
train of the four usually out of action.

The locomotives and carriages were
all built especially for the park, with the carriages using an improved
design to previous Disney parks.  They are completely covered, with
seating in square inlets and a large opening on the “park” side. 
Inside, they feature an incredible amount of detail, including wood
panelling, lighting and custom stained-glass windows.

Discoveryland Railroad Station was
added in 1993, hence its absence on the attraction poster featured under
Main Street Station.

Train #4, “Eureka” was also added in
1993, to add extra capacity with the fourth station and allow easier
refurbishment of the existing trains.

Metalwork, posters, tiling,
engravings and more featuring “EDLRR” can still be found across the
Railroad.  This stands for “Euro Disneyland Railroad”, and has been
left in place despite the name change as a reminder of the line’s history. 
The carriages also featured “Euro Disneyland Railroad” across their roofs,
and this was not repainted to “Disneyland Railroad” until as late as 2002!

History

You often hear the words “it all began
with a mouse”, but, in the case of Disneyland, it all actually began with a
railroad.  Walt Disney’s passion for trains caused him to dream up an
idyllic park and miniature railway adjacent to the Disney studio in Burbank,
California.  As time progressed, the project grew and grew into the
massive “theme park” concept we now know as Disneyland, with the railroad
circling the entire project.
