After the gold rush, this sleepy farming ranch shows a simpler way of life. HistoryFrontierland was an opening day land at Disneyland, California on 17th July 1955, envisaged by Walt and his Imagineers as a tribute to the frontiersmen who tamed the West and playing off the success of Davy Crockett and other ’50s Westerns. Spurred by European love of the Wild West, the Parisian Frontierland is by far the largest and grandest. For the first and only time, Big Thunder Mountain is located on an island and the land features a Haunted Mansion (Phantom Manor). An entire backstory links every element of the Far West landscape. Closed & ReplacedCritter Corral(1992 – 2007) “Temporarily” closed for several years before its official closure in July 2007, Critter Corral’s maintenance and upkeep costs appeared to get the better of it in a quiet corner of the land. The Lucky Nugget Saloon shows(1992 – 1998) Diamond Lil produced several shows in the saloon’s first five years, from the opening Lucky Nugget Revue to Rosie and the Rebels. Now the place for Disney character eat ‘n’ greets. Pueblo Trading Post(1992 – ??) Built from ochre New Mexico clay, here you could find the traditional handicrafts of the Navajo and Hopi indians – an array of pottery, hand-woven blankets, jewellery, flutes and dolls. Woodcarver’s Workshop(1992 – ??) Close by Critter Corral, this workshop packed with tools sold a variety of carved souvenirs – with a woodcrafter on-hand to carve animals by request. Indian Canoes(1992 – 1994) Twenty guests navigate the Rivers of the Far West in their own canoe, with two guide, skirting Wilderness Island and passing through Rainbow Arch. Closed for low capacity, replaced several years later with Pocahontas Indian Village. | This is Frontierland, the legendary American West, where the rivers still run free and anyone’s dream can turn to gold.
Yeee ha! You’ve arrived in Thunder Mesa, a bustling town at the height of the gold rush. Cool off and survey your territory on a riverboat from Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing, before setting off for the great frontier and setting your sights on gold at Big Thunder Mountain, as the wildest ride in the wilderness takes you on a plunging, twisting journey around the legendary peaks. Avoid a flooded mineshaft and toppling rocks, as you rumble through the deserted caverns of this stunning landscape. The haunting music and eerie wails from the mansion on the hill draw you closer, to discover the dark secrets and haunting surprises of Phantom Manor. As you meet the 999 happy haunts, keep your wits about you – they say there’s room for one more! Before you leave Thunder Mesa on the quest for even wilder frontiers, practice your cowboy competence at the local Rustler Roundup Shootin’ Gallery. Pocahontas Indian Village lets children have some carefree fun in the heart of the forest, whilst the laid-back, friendly atmosphere at The Chaparral Theater and Critter Corral is perfect for anyone who’s all gold rush-ed out! Big Thunder Mountain is the most popular attraction in the park. Head here at opening or just before closing, or grab a Fastpass. Phantom Manor takes on a new (after) life at night, with the distant howl of coyotes and an awesome eerie ambiance! Frontierland is one of the best lands to take a break from the action and relax. Head over to Cottonwood Creek Ranch, Boot Hill or the waterfront of Pocahontas Indian Village for a quiet corner.
