At the end of the week, we review everything we have learned and have a letter party. This party gives the children the option to bring something from home that starts with the letter we have studied. These lessons have been created by using little or no money for supplies, only what you can find around your home. Indoors

I always let the children take turns helping in some way and also serving. We usually play restaurant during meal time. They each fix a plate for someone else. This helps them to pay attention to details and to also listen to others likes and dislikes. They also socialize more with each other while eating and they remember to wash their hands and mind their manners.

You will need:

  • 1 box of round pretzel sticks
  • Peanut butter
  • Raisins

Have the children spoon peanut butter over the pretzel stick. Place the raisins on top of the peanut butter to represent the ants. Enjoy.

Outdoors

Take a trip outdoors, weather permitting, to discuss plants, animals or insects that begin with the letter “L”. Collect several leaves that are different sizes, shapes and colors. Return inside with your collection to do a leaf project.

For this project you will need two square pieces of wax paper per child, a variety of leaves to choose from and decorating supplies. Have each child place a leaf of their choice on one piece of wax paper. Let the child decorate the leaf. When finished, place the other piece of wax paper over the leaf so that the leaf is sandwiched between the wax paper.

Adults only

Use an iron set on low heat to run over the wax paper to seal the edges together. Using a hole punch, you can punch holes around the edge to thread a ribbon around the leaf picture or punch only enough holes to thread a ribbon for hanging. This is a treasured project that is great for preserving moments in time.

Remember to have fun with the children. You don’t need to spend hours preparing for these lessons and in the end, the children will learn and have fun, you will too.

5 Video Games That Will Rock This Summer

1) Duke Nukem: Critical Mass(PSP, Nintendo DS). Yes, you heard right, DUKE NUKEM! Duke Nukem Advance for the Game Boy Advance was the last Duke Nukem appearance in a game aside from cell phone games. For those unfamiliar the Duke Nukem series, Duke is a gun-toting badass that goes around shooting almost everything in site, from aliens to half-naked women to mutants, for the sheer fun of, well shooting everything in site. Previous Duke games had very little in the way of storyline, and the PSP version will share that characteristic. It will be a first-person shooter while the DS version will be a side-scroller. Both games will have multiplayer, but the PSP version will have competitive multiplayer while the DS version has a co-op system(see article). This game comes out July 1st and will cost $29.99 for both the PSP and Nintendo DS.

2) Epic Mickey(Nintendo Wii). Arguably the most famous cartoon character in the world, Mickey Mouse, will star in this platformer that arrives on the Wii September 16th(according to Wikipedia. Some game sites still list the release date as TBA or on a later date). The genius behind this game is none other than legendary Warren Spector(of Thief and Deus Ex fame). This game looks to take Mickey back to some of his heroic early days, instead of his cutesy recent history. With Spector running the show, I have no doubt that this game will be good, but it will be interesting to see the sort of reception it receives. Will it post Marioesque-type sales, or will it be more in the realm of E.T. for the Atari 2600? Only time will tell, but this game is generating a lot of excitement. It will retail for $49.99.

3) Dead Rising 2(PS3, Xbox 360). Zombies, zombies, and more zombies are waiting to be slaughtered in this super-bloody sequel to the popular Dead Rising. Use chainsaws, flamethrowers, or whatever is close at hand to dismember and disembowel an endless army zombies in a gladiatorial-style competition.  Certain advancements have been done in the gameplay to increase the information about Pokemon go accounts for sale. Next to Mario and Zelda, the Metroid franchise is probably the most popular Nintendo franchise. In this offering, players will be able to switch from 2-D to 3-D, which sounds interesting and somewhat unique. A lot will be expected from this game, as past Metroid titles like Metroid Prime have raised the bar for action shooters. This game will cost $49.99.

5) Madden NFL 2011(PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PSP). Football’s most famous video game franchise will release its yearly edition on August 10th. Players are supposed to get smarter in this year’s release, with offensive players knowing where the first down marker is, and defenders focusing on knocking the ball out of the air on passes(see article). Your daily activities can have a huge affect on your sleep at night. First let’s take a look at what everyday things can cause sleep deprivation. One of the worst things to do is take naps during the day. This throws off your sleep clock which makes it tougher to fall asleep at night. If you feel like you absolutely need to rest, take a nap as early as possible and for no more than 30 minutes. Too much sleep causes disruptive sleep patterns.

Limit your caffeine during the day. Caffeine, found in things like coffee, soft drinks and chocolate, is a mild stimulant that keeps you awake for hours. Try not to consume it after 4 in the afternoon. Reduce the amount of alcohol and nicotine during the day as well. Even though alcohol is a sedative, it is very disruptive to sleeping patterns. The Motorcycle Liked Me – the Best Bike I Ever Owned

At the age of eight, I awoke one summer morning to my father making noise in the driveway. He was making all sorts of racket and then started an engine. I graduated from that little bike to larger bikes until I was 13. After three years of saving my paper route money with dad matching every dollar I saved, we walked into the local Yamaha dealer and bought the one bike I could afford. A shiny silver Yamaha Enduro 100, it was my first new bike and it actually had some power. Finally, at the age of 16, I had received my driver’s license, I passed my Motorcycle Safety Foundations Course on that bike as well as my test to get my motorcycle endorsement. I was on top of the world, free to ride my motorcycle to friends’ homes and to school.

Having graduated from college and working at my first real job, I found a nice used touring motorcycle. I never really liked the 1950s retro Harley look, and I honestly never could afford one as it seemed that everyone thought their Harley was worth gold. I wanted something like a gold wing, cool motorcycle gloves, a big road bike I could ride for 1000 miles and smile the whole way and carry everything I needed for a week longs trip. The problem was that every gold wing in my price range had a common problem, A dead alternator. This was either a $1000 fix at the dealer or you had to have a garage where you could remove the engine to fix it. So, I settled for a burgundy bike that I found on the side of the road on my way home one day from work, it was a 1983 Yamaha Venture. It looked a lot sexier than the gold wings that I was looking at and it had a lot fewer miles on the odometer. After talking to the owner twice over a few days, he lowered the price for me and I rode off on my first big touring bike. The comfortable ride and smile on my face were only exceeded by the lack of work the bike needed, I never had to replace anything but tires and oil. Every time I went somewhere I had a smile on my face the whole way, I saw a lot of the Midwest behind those handlebars.

A few years ago, I parked that Venture in the back yard and bought a brand new Yamaha FJR1300. For the first time, I had a NEW bike, and it was really fast! But rapidly I started to find flaws, you could not carry very much on the bike as it did not have a trunk. I had to add handlebar risers as they sit too low for a 5 foot 11 guy, and the seat was horrible to sit on for long rides. These flaws were easy to overcome by buying parts or a custom seat until one day the engine started making noise, A loud tick that the dealer told me was normal until I started blowing smoke. The engine has defective valve guides and Yamaha would not stand behind it even though it only had 10,000 miles on it. While the bike was in the shop, I uncovered the Venture that has sat forgotten in the back yard for three years. I installed a new battery and gave it some fresh gas. She fired right up and ran for me, it was as if it was never put into storage. My quick ride around the block brought me back to why I loved that bike, and why I put so many miles on it. When the FJR was finally fixed and I paid the huge repair bill, I decided to put it up for sale. I spent the next winter with a friend in his garage and took the Venture apart. After looking it all over and giving her a fresh coat of paint, $600 in tune-up parts, filters and tires, I had a like-new old friend. The one bike that took me everywhere and waited patiently for me.

I still ride that Yamaha Venture to this day. It has needed a couple of small repairs due to its advanced age, but I completely trust that motorcycle to take me home no matter what, I think it likes me.
