The Stuff of
Legends

Born in Iowa in 1846, William Frederick
Cody (who later earned the name “Buffalo Bill” in honour of his
buffalo-hunting ability) became the U.S. Army’s top scout by the time he was
14. He took part in the Gold Rush, then signed on as a rider for the Pony
Express – a highly dangerous undertaking. These fearless, hell-for-leather
riders carried the mail between the East and West Coasts, and Buffalo Bill
eventually became an American legend thanks to his friend, Ned Buntline, who
wrote about his adventures in a popular novel that sold millions of copies.

After taking part in the heroic conquest
of the West, Buffalo Bill decided to dramatise this experience in his
thrilling, legendary “Wild West” spectacle. In 1892, he convinced a ranch
owner from North Platte to finance an annual Independence Day show called
“To the Glory of the Star-Spangled Banner”. This was where the Buffalo
Bill’s Wild West Show originally began, a startling modern show of epic
proportions.

Thanks to the realism used to stage the production – with
cowboys, Indians, buffaloes, horses and more – Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show
undoubtedly provided the inspiration for the Western as a film genre and
helped pave the way to a rediscovery of Indian culture. The show evokes the
most extraordinary epic of the 19th century: the riveting story of young
America and the daring trailblazers who opened up her farthest western
reaches.

When it was taken across the Atlantic
early in the 19th century, no fewer than 6 ships were required to transport
the entire troupe and the animals. At the foot of the Eiffel Tower in 1905,
this spectacle attracted over three million visitors. Since Buffalo Bill’s
Wild West Show began in Disney Village, at the opening of Disneyland Resort
Paris in 1992, it has been experienced by over 10 million guests.

Upon arriving at the Disney Village
arena, you’ll be presented with your very own cowboy hat and shown into
Colonel Cody’s Saloon to soak up the real Western atmosphere. Relax with a
pre-show drink and enjoy the music from South Carolina’s The Moody Brothers,
or trace the history of Buffalo Bill with a fascinating exhibit. Spectators
can admire original posters commemorating the world tours taken by Cody’s
“Wild West” spectacle, not to mention old state flags and other period
pieces such as tomahawks, Winchester rifles, totem poles, sheriff’s stars
and buffalo heads.

Once the show is almost ready to begin
and you’ve been totally immersed in the Far West festivities, you’ll be
shown to your seat in one of four coloured ranches, which match the coloured
band on your souvenir cowboy hat – the Gold Star, Red River, Blue Moon and
Green Mountain. With everyone in their seats and the unlimited drinks
flowing, the ranch-hands appear to whip up plenty of team spirit and some
good, old-fashioned rivalry between the ranches! Wave your cowboy hat in the
air, shout “yeehaa!” and get ready for the grand entrance of Buffalo Bill
himself…

Riding like the wind, roaring into the
centre of the arena, a band of fearless cowboys kick off the spectacular
show with several dramatic chases and charges, showcasing the daring life of
an American pioneer. Soon enough, Buffalo Bill is hot on their heels and
taking command, introducing the fearless, gun-shooting Annie Oakley and the
wise, majestic Sitting Bull to the arena.

The spectacular showcase of frontier
life continues with demonstrations of Indian rituals, a rodeo with stunt
riding, the arrival of the buffalo, lasso-throwing numbers and a shooting
match, where spectators try their hand at marksmanship. The scenes follow
each other at a furious pace, keeping you on the edge of your seat for every
second. It all culminates in a dramatic, tension-packed, hat-waving
recreation of the famous stagecoach race, before you charge off to your own
wild frontier, keeping your well-used cowboy hat as an authentic souvenir of
a legendary night.

A Real Cowboy Feast

The spectacular show includes a
delicious menu of authentic Wild West Texan cuisine, served to your table.
The Adult Menu offers three courses, with the main course providing a large,
hearty plateful of tasty cowboy grub. You can also choose from a range of
unlimited free drinks, just ask during the performance.

Bringing the Far West to Paris

The authenticity and attention to detail
at Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in Disney Village is unsurpassed. Every
detail you see is real, every second of action is live – the Wild West has
truly come to life before your eyes.

All of the actors and actresses starring
in the show hail from North America, with Buffalo Bill and Sitting Bull
themselves chosen after extensive auditions in Hollywood. The cowboys, who
perform daredevil chases and ballet sequences on horseback, include top
rodeo champions from the States. The Indians are true Indians, originating
from a variety of tribes across North America. Most are Blackfeet from the
North-Western United States, in addition to Crows from Montana, Sioux or
Crees from Canada, and a few Cherokees and Shawnees from the Mid-Western
United States).

The choice of animals used in the show
also follows the same rules of authenticity and respect for tradition. The
horses are the same as in the old days: Pintos and Appaloosas for the
Indians, and quarter-horses (straight from the U.S.) for the cowboys. The
buffalo, which remain wild even in captivity, come from Canada and require
special care due to their impressive weights of from 600 kilos to 1 ton. The
longhorn cattle, from Texas, live up to their name with the horns of an
adult male measuring between 1.5 and 2 metres long!

Robert Carsen, a recognised name in
opera direction, directed the show, with dialogue by Ian Burton, and
spirited original music by Georges Fenton. The lighting and special effects
were created by Andrew Bridge, whose exploits in “Cats” and “Phantom of the
Opera” are renowned the world over. The buffalo, horses and cattle are
worked seamlessly into the show by the talented Mario Luraschi and his crew.
The expansive Disney Village Arena building, which has housed the show since
1992, was designed by infamous architect Frank Gehry.

In all, it takes an incredible 80
technicians and 60 talented performing artists to stage Buffalo Bill’s Wild
West Show in Disney Village every night.
