The
project of bringing a studios-themed park to Disney’s European
resort actually began way back in 1987 when the plans for the
original Disneyland Park and resort were being made.  The
“second gate” was due to open in 1995, just three years after the
first park, and would have been named “Disney-MGM Studios
Europe”
.  The plans were put aside when the resort hit
major financial trouble in late 1992, but resurfaced again in 1998
when the resort was ready for major expansion and new plans were
drawn up for what we now know as Walt Disney Studios Park
Construction began in 1999, and after almost three years of
construction and months of rigorous testing, the park officially
opened to the public on the 16th March 2002, with a gala premiere
the previous night and numerous celebrity appearances.
