Amazing Stage Scenes
& Costumes Concept Art

28th March 2004

It looked like news about The Legend of the Lion King was coming in
faster and faster, and this has just proved to be absolutely right!
This latest piece of news is also probably one of the biggest so far!
Today, ten amazing new pieces of concept art appeared on the internet,
and they look to give us out biggest insight yet into the show.
The first six all show different scenes from the film represented by
the effects on stage, whereas the final four show some of the costume
designs that seem to have definitely taken just a bit of inspiration
from the Broadway musical!

The most exciting thing
about the Stage Scenes Concept Art is that they clearly show the water
effects in all their glory.  Those people who thought the effects
would simply be fountains coming up from the stage are thankfully
corrected, as the effect consists of a huge curtain of water falling
from the roof of the stage!  Yes, you heard correctly – a Water
Curtain!  This great effects allows still images, colours and
even films to be projected onto the falling water, and the concept art
shows how this highly original effect will be used…

This shows a
general view of the stage with the on-stage waterfall running
and “The Lion King” logo projected onto the back of the stage.

A scene showing
the sun rising, with the sun as a projection onto the back of
the stage.  What are the white specks that look like
snow?!

A scene showing
the sun risen further into the sky.  The effect that
looks like snow is still there!

The fiery
battle between Simba and Scar.  Notice the silhouettes of
the two lions fighting in the background.  The flames are
rumoured to only be an effect using water vapour and very
accurately positioned lighting – it would be expensive and
unsafe to use such large real flames inside Videopolis!

After the
battle, the waterfall flows again and life returns to the
Pridelands.  This could show the part of the film after
the end battle, but the image of Mufasa projected on the
waterfall means it is more likely to show Simba’s vision of
Mufasa in the clouds.

This final
stage scene concept art shows a perfect view of the Pridelands
with Pride Rock just visible to the right.  Pride Rock is
supposed to move into the scene from the right of the stage when
it is needed.

Are you excited now?!
These pieces of concept art seem to be very official aswell, and they
definitely fit in with the
second Stage
Design
and all the rumours we’ve heard so far.  Now, here’s
the concept art for some of the costumes in the show:

This
collection of concept art shows concept art for the following
characters:

  • Nala
  • Simba
  • Rafiki
  • Crocodiles
  • Antelopes
  • Rhinoceros
  • Scar
  • Hyenas

Some or all of
this concept art could change, as the costume designs are likely
to undergo lots of changes and “fine-tuning” before the the show
begins to make sure they are not only a good design, but practical
for use in the show.

Let’s hope the show
can continue to live up to expectations, or even exceed them as it has
done here! 😉
