The Lion King
Carnival – A Preview of “The Lion King Show”?!

7th February 2004

The month-long “Lion
King Carnival” begins today, and the second Carnival Season in
Disneyland Park is definitely looking a lot better than the first!
Gone are the tacky decorations down Main Street USA and the wooden
hut on Central Plaza, and in comes a fantastic festival centred
around Central Plaza.  You’ll find a funny and clever photo
point next to Central Plaza featuring an elephant squashed into a
jeep, but the main attraction is, without a doubt, the amazing
Pride Rock Stage on Central Plaza itself.  This beautiful
large stage is the home of “Le Crmonie de l’Histoire de la Vie”
(The Circle of Life Ceremony), a show performed up to five times a
day making use of the new lighting effects installed in the former
flower beds of Central Plaza at Christmas, and featuring a huge
cast of African singers and dancers.  This cast of 70
performers make their way from Adventureland Bazaar to the Pride
Rock Stage in a variety of wonderful detailed costumes.
You’ll find people dressed as zebras with their body making up
part of a life-size wooden puppet, people dressed as big cats with
two smaller ones on their arms, pairs of people working one of a
couple of large brown elephants, people covered in grass and
leaves to form the foliage, people working life-size patchwork
hippos with birds perched on their backs, and many more performers
in other fantastic costumes.  The stars of the show are
definitely Rafiki and Timon, the only two characters with set
Disney Theme Park costumes who make their way to stage like a
couple of Hollywood stars!  (Wait a minute…!)  These
two are joined by a group of great singers in beautiful African
costumes, who sing a melody of The Lion King’s songs before the
new Lion King is presented to the crowds – a real lion cub no
less!  Two of the most popular characters from the show,
however, are the two hilarious ostriches!  These great
costumes/puppets are each controlled by one person who is only
partially hidden by the costume, which jolts about all over the
place as the ostrich’s beak pecks out at people in the crowd!

When fans first saw
The Lion King Carnival, and more notably The Circle of Life
Ceremony, most immediately saw the potential the costumes and
props had to be used in the forthcoming Lion King Show in
Videopolis.  Now that the show has become so popular along
with the rest of the carnival, it is very likely that it could
infact return next year.  This means the costumes and props
will need to be kept in storage for next February, but this does
not mean some of them could be reproduced for use in the
Videopolis show.  Most of the costumes seen in the Circle of
Life Ceremony could definitely be used in a proper stage
production of “The Lion King”, and so it is very likely that we
will either see more of some of these costumes produced for use in
the show or we may infact see some of the designs modified or
changed to fit in with the (as-yet unknown) style of the show.
Whatever may happen, it is still very likely that the costumes
seen in The Lion King Carnival can definitely be seen as a preview
of what to expect on June 26th!!!
