History
& Creation

PanoraMagique, a stunning new icon of
the resort, opened on the 9th April 2005 alongside Space Mountain: Mission 2
and went on to enjoy soaring success, with over 100,000 people taken high
into the sky above Lake Disney in under six months. The balloon remained a
closely-guarded secret of Imagineering until the initial concept art was
shown in the resort’s 2005 brochure. Construction began in January 2005,
with the custom-designed launch pad and winch system installed first. The
balloon itself arrived in late March, and was filled with helium once all
other installation had been completed. The first flights took place in early
April, and PanoraMagique instantly became an unmissable icon, noticeable
from all across the entire resort.

The balloon is operated by renowned
international company Arophile on behalf of Disneyland Resort Paris, but is
certainly not lacking the essential Disney touches. In addition to the
quant, Parisian-styled ticket booth, the balloon itself features a detailed
and colourful design with Tinkerbell circling around it, sprinkling her
pixie dust. The ticket booth also features recreated posters from historic
balloon flights, with a general theme of the first balloon flights in the
gardens of Paris. The entire project was jointly conceived by Arophile and
Disneyland Resort Paris Imagineering, to create a tailor-made balloon
experience with as much Disney magic as possible.

Arophile have a contact to operate the
balloon year-round for at least 7 years, and with the balloon already
becoming the most popular ever launched in the world, the magic of
PanoraMagique looks set to become an unmissable aspect of the Disneyland
Resort Paris experience for long into the future.

Fun Facts

This is the largest tethered balloon
in the world and the most popular ever, with guest numbers surpassing all
expectations since its launch in April 2005.

The high-speed, silent winch system
allows up to 6 flights in one hour. The balloon is filled with around 5,500
cubic metres of helium.

1600m2 of fabric were used to create
the helium-filled balloon. It has a diameter of 23 metres, a circumference
of 73 metres and a total height of 36 metres.

Paris was the home of the first ever
balloon flights, as Henri Giffard’s balloon rose into the skies above the
Tuileries gardens in Paris during the Universal Exposition in 1878. In 1900,
there were a total of 6 balloons across Paris.  As you soar into the
sky on PanoraMagique, you just might catch a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower way
off in the distance, if it’s a clear day!
